Thomson Reuters Releases EndNote X4 for Windows

Popular bibliographic management solution now imports and searches PDFs, addresses new journal style requirements, and more

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Philadelphia PA, London, UK - June 15, 2010—Thomson Reuters today released a major upgrade to Thomson Reuters EndNote® for Windows, the bibliographic management and publishing solution used by millions of researchers, librarians and students worldwide. EndNote X4 enables researchers to import and search PDF files, use new Cite While You Write™ features that simplify their writing, collaborate in new ways using EndNote Web and more.

“The release of EndNote X4 is a logical next step in our commitment to streamline researchers’ workflow and simplify collaboration with others,” said Keith MacGregor, vice president, Scientific and Scholarly Research at Thomson Reuters. “Enabling users to create and search records from PDFs provides them with new ways to build their reference databases efficiently, while enhanced connectivity with the ResearcherID author community allows authors to share their research and collaborate globally.”

Import and search records from PDFs
EndNote expands its PDF management from finding full text automatically and attaching PDFs to existing records with drag-and-drop to now importing a single PDF file or a folder of PDF files. EndNote X4 extracts basic bibliographic information using the Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) and CrossRef® data to create new records in a reference library. Users can also extend their retrieval results beyond reference data by searching attached PDF files.

Use new Cite While You Write features
EndNote X4 is compatible with Microsoft® Word 2010 and introduces new formatting options for citing scholarly papers properly. EndNote links in-text citations to the bibliography automatically in Microsoft Word—with or without hyperlinks. Users also have increased options for formatting footnotes with customizable short forms as well as full support of the APA 6th style including a multiple author ellipse. The new combined Edit and Manage Citations command consolidates the most frequently used functions in one Cite While You Write window. And, users can view a report of references cited in a Word document with a new auto-group in the EndNote library.

Collaborate more with EndNote Web
Every EndNote user receives their own EndNote Web account for collaborating with others and accessing references when away from the desktop. Users can now transfer up to10,000 references between the Web and desktop, and search shared groups when selecting references to cite. Reference lists can be sorted by Times Cited, date added to the library or date modified to locate references quickly. EndNote Web makes it easy to manage a personal publication list for the free ResearcherID author community. References stored in the EndNote Web group are visible instantly in the public community that enables users to eliminate author misidentification and review personal citation metrics from the Web of Knowledge.

Other features of the upgrade include:

  • Create new groups by comparing, combining and suppressing existing groups.
  • Modify references easily in the new Quick Edit tab on the main library window.
  • Edit references when comparing duplicates.
  • Expand library retrieval results by adding wildcards within search terms.
  • Cite While You Write in over 4,500 journal styles!

Pricing and Availability
EndNote X4 is designed for Windows XP, Vista and 7. The list price of EndNote X4 is $299.95 USD. Students in North America can purchase EndNote X4 for $115.95 USD with a valid student I.D. For a list of international distributors, go to www.endnote.com. Special upgrade prices are available to owners of previous versions. Thomson Reuters Releases Reference Manager 12 for Windows

Powerful bibliographic management software expands file management, introduces Cite While You Write™ for Word 2007 for Windows® and more

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Philadelphia, PA, London, UK, September 2, 2008—
The Scientific business of Thomson Reuters today announced the release of a major upgrade to Reference Manager® for Windows—the bibliographic software used by researchers worldwide. Known as the only citation management software with a true multi-user network version, Reference Manager also provides a tool for publishing Reference Manager databases on the Web or to an intranet. Reference Manager 12 delivers expanded file management, Cite While You Write integration with Microsoft Word 2007 and enhancements to Web Publisher that simplify collaboration.

“In an ever-evolving global market, the ability to effortlessly share research with colleagues is critical,” said Keith MacGregor, EVP, Academic and Government Markets at Thomson Reuters. “Reference Manager 12 provides researchers with the flexibility to collaborate using a network, the Web or an Intranet, enabling access to references and related files anytime, anywhere.”

Link and organize files easily
Reference Manager users can now organize linked files—PDFs, graphics, and more—with their database to create a single file repository. By simply dragging and dropping a file onto a reference, Reference Manager stores a copy of the file in the repository and creates a link automatically. Existing links in a Reference Manager database can be converted to the new file management system in one step.

Cite While You Write with Microsoft Word 2007 for Windows
Reference Manager introduces a Cite While You Write tab on the Word 2007 ribbon, providing users with immediate access to frequently used commands. The new Reference Manager tab makes it easier for users to locate citations and create bibliographies instantly while writing in Microsoft Word 2007.

Collaborate with colleagues using Web Publisher
The Reference Manager Web Publisher allows users to post up to 15 Reference Manager databases to the Web or to an intranet in seconds using a simple Web publishing tool. Now Web Publisher can be run as a Windows service, ensuring that databases are always available for sharing references with colleagues while Windows is running. It is now easier to configure the Web publisher to run using Network Address Translation. And Reference Manager databases can be accessed by third party applications and enterprise portals using updated SOAP and WSDL standards.

Other new, time-saving features include:

  • Use new reference types—Edited Book, Online Source and Grant—as well as new fields in many reference types, including Conference Title, Conference Location and the NIH required PMCID.
  • Spell-check an entire database as well as individual records.
  • Move easily between records with Next and Previous buttons.
  • Identify duplicates with more options—Reference Manager can mark them automatically for instant identification.

With Reference Manager, authors can save time by exporting references directly from online resources such as ISI Web of KnowledgeSM. Manuscripts formatted by Reference Manager can be submitted easily for publications using Manuscript Central™, an online manuscript and peer review system for scholarly publishers from ScholarOne™.
